The Najt Lab
Lipid Droplets as a Signalling Node
The Najt Lab at Virginia Tech
The Najt Lab has been established at Virginia Tech! We are now up and running as of October 2023!
Research in the Najt laboratory focuses the comprehensive understanding of lipid metabolism, with an emphasis on how alterations in the genes and metabolites in this network contribute to human diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, non-alcoholic/metabolic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD), hepatic insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2-Diabetes and how these diseases impact healthspan. Our studies span a range of disciplines that ultimately link nutrition, exercise physiology, biochemistry and physiology. In other words, the lab studies metabolism on a global level.
An important goal of the laboratory is to do research that helps us identify detailed mechanisms of disease and aging using animal and cell models and then translate these findings to the clinic. Ultimately, we hope that by advancing our knowledge into the basic metabolism of nutrients we will come closer to understanding how metabolic diseases develop and, therefore, will be better equipped to identify new preventions or treatments.

Interested in joining the Najt lab?
We are always on the lookout for enthusiastic postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates that are passionate about science and want to join a stimulating and fun environment to pursue their scientific interests. Please contact us by visiting the contact page, where you can find information about job posting and possible research opportunities!
In the Najt lab, we strive to create a collaborative environment that prioritizes curiosity, community, and accessibility. We seek to empower all members of the lab to embrace their own unique identities while still respecting others. We will support and work with lab members to imagine, plan for, and achieve their individual career goals while contributing to the scientific pursuit.
